Nakon dugogodišnjih priprema, odgoda i promjena planova, Virgin Galactic je napokon pokrenuo svoj komercijalni program svemirskih letova za putnike koji su za to platili kartu. Na šestom letu njihove svemirske letjelice sudjelovale su i prva tri svemirska putnika nepovezana s kompanijom Richard Branson, pa je time i službeno započelo razdoblje pružanja usluga za potencijalne svemirske turiste u Virgin Galacticu.

Let Galactic 01 ugostio je dvojicu stručnjaka iz Ratnog zrakoplovstva Italije, Waltera Villadeija ja Angelo Landolfionda Pantaleonea Carluccija iz talijanskog Nacionalnog istraživačkog vijeća jedan je stručnjak Virgin Galactica, instruktor astronauta brdo benneta. Osim što su se donekle zabavili u kratkom vremenu bestežinskog stanja te su imali priliku vidjeti Zemlju s visine od 85 kilometara, putnici u ovom letu obavili su i 13 znanstvenih eksperimenata povezanih s termodinamikom fluida i razvojem održivih materijala u uvjetima mikrogravitacije.
Cijeli je današnji let prošao prema planu – od polijetanja pod trupom letjelice VMS Eve, preko penjanja do 15 kilometara visine uz njezinu pomoć, pa sve do odvajanja i postizanja bestežinskog stanja na visini od 85 kilometara. Nakon toga, letjelica VSS Unity glatko se i bez problema spustila natrag na tlo, na pistu svemirske luke Spaceport America u Novom Meksiku, odakle je i poletjela.
Uspjeh ove godine vjerojatno znači i da će Virgin Galactic sada nastaviti s redovnim komercijalnim letovima, za koje su već navodno prodavali 700-tinjak karata, po cijenama od 250 do 450 tisuća dolara. Potencijalni svemirski turisti na to čekaju već godinama.
